Broken Garage Door Spring? Why Garage Door Spring Replacement Is Not a DIY Job
There are plenty of garage door jobs a handy homeowner can take on. Garage door spring replacement is not one of them, and it is the single repair we most often ask people to leave alone. This is not us protecting a service call. It is the one part of a garage door that sends people to the emergency room.

How to tell a spring has broken
Most people know something is wrong before they know what. The usual signs:
- A loud bang from the garage, often overnight or in cold weather, with nothing obviously wrong when you look.
- The door will not open, or the opener strains, lifts a few inches and stops.
- A visible gap in the coiled spring above the door — a clean break with a two-inch space where the metal separated.
- The door feels impossibly heavy if you try to lift it by hand.
- The door drops fast or comes down crooked instead of moving smoothly.
If any of that sounds familiar, stop using the door. Do not keep pressing the opener to force it.
Why the tension is the problem
A garage door is heavy — a typical double residential door runs a few hundred pounds, and insulated and custom doors are heavier still. The opener does not lift that weight. The springs do. The opener is really just guiding a load that the spring system has already balanced.
To do that, those springs are wound under enormous tension, and that energy stays stored in them whether the door is working or not. Release it in an uncontrolled way — with the wrong tool, at the wrong angle, or by loosening the wrong fastener first — and it comes out all at once. The industry association for door manufacturers puts it bluntly in its homeowner safety guidance: springs are the most dangerous part of the door, and spring systems should be serviced only by trained technicians.
The injuries are not minor. Broken fingers and hands, facial injuries, and worse. It happens fast and there is no warning.
Why the internet makes garage door spring replacement look easy
There is no shortage of videos showing the whole job done in eight minutes. What they generally leave out:
The right winding bars matter. Correctly sized solid steel winding bars are the only safe tool. Screwdrivers and rebar are what people reach for instead, and they are what slips.
The spring has to be specified, not just matched. Wire diameter, inside diameter, length and wind direction all have to suit the weight and travel of your specific door. A spring that looks the same is not the same. Get it wrong and the door is unbalanced, which wears out the opener, strains the cables and creates a new hazard.
Springs are usually replaced in pairs. If your door has two and one has broken, the other is the same age with the same cycles on it. DASMA recommends replacing both. Doing one is a false economy that usually means a second failure within a year.
The cables and drums are part of the job. A spring rarely fails in isolation. Frayed cables and worn drums often come with it, and they need checking while the system is apart.
What a professional spring replacement involves
When our crew comes out, a garage door spring replacement is methodical work. We secure the door so it cannot move. We release the remaining tension in a controlled way with proper bars. We measure the door and specify the correct springs rather than guessing from the old ones. We inspect the cables, drums, bearings and rollers while everything is accessible. We install the new springs, wind them to the correct tension, and then balance the door.
Balance is the part people do not see. Done properly, the door should stay put when you stop it halfway by hand — neither creeping up nor falling. That balance is what protects the opener and makes the door safe. Then we test the reversing safety features before we leave.
What it costs
We quote spring work as a free estimate rather than publishing a starting price, because the honest answer depends on the door. A standard residential door with a common spring size is very different from an oversized, insulated or custom door, and we would rather tell you the real number than a teaser price that changes when we arrive.
For other residential repair work, our service calls run $150 per hour plus parts. Commercial and industrial service is $175 per hour plus parts. If you want a figure before we come out, call and describe the door — we can usually give you a realistic range over the phone.
What you can safely do yourself
Plenty, actually. Keep the tracks clear. Wipe down and lightly lubricate rollers and hinges. Watch and listen to the door once a month — new noises are useful information. Test the auto-reverse by placing a roll of paper towel under the closing door and confirming it reverses on contact. And check the cables visually for fraying, without touching them.
